Nutrition Education

CICOA provides nutrition education to individuals and their families in neighborhood meal sites in Marion and the surrounding counties to promote healthy food choices, improve health behaviors and manage nutrition-related chronic diseases. Dining With Diabetes Academy

CICOA funds a Dining with Diabetes Academy program that will be available in many of the Marion County neighborhood meal sites through 2011. The Dining with Diabetes Academy is an educational program, developed with the Purdue Extension – Marion County Office, that is focused on how to prepare healthy, low-fat, low-sodium foods safely. Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is offering a Poison Information for Seniors presentation at the following CICOA meal sites. Medication review and blood pressure checks will also be available.

Living a Healthy Life: Workshop and Registration Form

CICOA is offering  a six-week course entitled "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,"  which is a self-management program developed by Stanford University's School of Medicine to help those with ongoing health concerns better manage day-to-day activities. The workshop is open to individuals with arthritis, asthma, cancer, chronic pain, diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, osteoporosis, Parkinson's and more--as well as their family members and caregivers. There is a $10.00 registration fee, and all participants will receive a resource book.

Subjects include techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; nutrition; and how to evaluate new treatments.
