Volunteers provide vital support for CICOA and our clients. We welcome your willingness to serve and to share your ideas, as well as your time and talent. CICOA provides a variety of opportunities for individuals, families, and other organizations in Central Indiana.
Volunteers are never allowed to administer medicine, give medical advice, provide personal care or transport a client. Group activities need to be coordinated well ahead of time to allow adequate time for planning.
Volunteer Opportunities
-
Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Volunteer: Teach Medicare beneficiaries how to protect their personal identity, detect errors on their health care bills, and report deceptive health care practices (ie. illegal marketing, providing unnecessary services, fraudulent billing practices). SMP volunteers speak to Medicare beneficiaries to help stop Medicare and Medicaid fraud in their communities through group presentations, community events, help lines or one-on-one counseling. Training is provided.
-
Home Visitor: Commit to visiting an individual every week or two for an hour or more, offering support, encouragement and an opportunity for conversation and companionship on a one-to-one basis.
- Light Housekeeping: Some clients need not only companionship but also assistance with a variety of tasks, including light housekeeping (folding laundry, dusting, etc.); help with reading/returning mail; reading newspapers, magazines and books to the client; running errands; or organizing living space and/or other needs.
- Telephone Reassurance: Commit to calling a senior on a regular basis (daily, once or twice a week as needed) to check in with them, serve as a reminder to take medicine, or just have a conversation.
- Periodic/Seasonal Needs: Raking leaves, general yard work, snow shoveling, indoor/outdoor painting, indoor/outdoor cleaning, organizing, basic plumbing, carpentry, or other simple household repairs as needed.
- Office Work: Filing, administrative assistance, hand-addressing of holiday cards, making telephone calls or other tasks as needed. Our office is open only during regular business hours.
- Repairs/Home Modifications: Providing skilled and unskilled help to clients who have basic home maintenance needs, such as hanging pictures, painting a room, organizing and sorting belongings to provide more useable and safe living conditions, basic plumbing, carpentry or other household repairs as needed. CICOA also has an annual event called Safe at Home that provides home modifications for seniors to help make their homes safe and accessible for daily living. The home improvement projects include the addition of grab bars in bathrooms, installing handrails and banisters on steps, installing comfort height toilets, changing out lavatory faucets for those with lever handles, as well as outdoor yard clean-up. We welcome individuals and groups to participate in this annual project.
- Other: We welcome schools or other groups to make holiday cards or decorations or other creative projects to benefit our clients.
