Lifelong Living Communities Safe at Home

Safe at Home

CICOA Safe at Home LogoMore than 150 volunteers took part in CICOA’s second annual Marion County Safe At Home event on Saturday, Oct. 1, performing minor home modifications and yard work to help area seniors stay "safe at home." This year’s event provided home modifications in the Haughville, Hawthorne and Stringtown neighborhoods on the near west side of Indianapolis.

Safe at Home is an annual high-impact half-day of service to homeowners over the age of 60 or to persons of any age with a disability to help make their homes safe and accessible for daily living. During the half-day service project, volunteers:

  • Installed 35 grab bars around toilets and bathtubs
  • Replaced 13 toilets
  • Built 2 ramps to ease transition into and out of homes
  • Repaired or replaced 4 sets of entry steps
  • Installed 27 handrails for basement steps and entry ways
  • Cleared overgrowth and debris from the yards of 14 homes

The projects were privately funded by individual and corporate donations to CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions.
