Lifelong Living Communities
Creating Vibrant Neighborhoods for Aging
CICOA leads the effort to make the cities, towns and neighborhoods of Central Indiana vibrant neighborhoods where residents—young and old—can grow up and grow old together. Known as Lifelong Living Communities, the program works with homeowners, civic leaders, philanthropic organizations, and neighborhood associations to create opportunities for meaningful social interaction and to enable seniors to continue living in their homes and neighborhoods of choice.
Advantage Initiative Survey
In the spring of 2008, CICOA sponsored a statewide AdvantAge Initiative Survey of seniors age 60 and over. The responses provided us with reliable senior population data in our eight-county service area. Based on the results, CICOA has facilitated conversations in each of the counties and has developed an Action Guide to help make Central Indiana the most elder friendly community. The Four Domains
Lifelong Living Communities accommodate the needs of seniors with an emphasis on mobility and access to services. Specifically, elder friendly communities:
- Address basic needs
- Optimize physical health and well being
- Maximize independence for the frail and disabled
- Promote social and civic engagement

Home Modifications
With funding from individuals and local organizations and the help of volunteers, CICOA provides home modifications to improve accessiblity and safety—such as the installation of ramps, handrails, grab bars and step-in showers—that allow people to continue living safely and comfortably in their homes. CICOA targets neighborhoods that have high population densities of older homeowners on fixed incomes. Last year, CICOA provided more than 40 home modifications for low-income elderly Indianapolis residents.
Safe at Home
Safe at Home is a high-impact, half-day of service to homeowners over the age of 60 or to persons of any age with a disability to help make their homes safe and accessible for daily living. The inaugural event was held Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010. A morning home modification project concluded with a noon meal, and volunteers and homeowners were invited that evening to watch the Indianapolis Indians play baseball at Victory Field. This Safe at Home Event targeted homes in the west side neighborhoods of Hawthorne, Haughville and Stringtown.
